SASI-S Surgery in Perth

What is SASI-S surgery?

Single Anastomosis Stomach-Ileal Bypass (or SASI-S Bypass) is a combination of a sleeve gastrectomy and an intestinal bypass. To begin with, a sleeve gastrectomy is performed, followed by the joining of the bottom part of the stomach to the distal part of the small intestine. The length of the bypass is determined by the required amount of weight-loss.

After this procedure, roughly half of the food will bypass the first part of the small intestine, which will then causes a reduction in the absorption of fats and sugars. Along with this, the slow digestion of the food In the small intestine stimulates the release of intestinal hormones, which tell the brain to stop eating. This means you eat less, resulting in weight loss.

ADVANTAGES OF SASI-S SURGERY

Many studies show that SASI-S bariatric surgery can provide greater weight loss when compared to a standard sleeve gastrectomy, or a traditional gastric bypass.

  • Reduces hunger
  • Less risk of nutritional deficiencies
  • Benefits of the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass
    • Good quality eating
    • Continuity of gastrointestinal tract is maintained
    • 70 – 90% diabetes control
  • Access to bile duct remains (if in the future gallstones need to be removed)
  • Less risk of an internal hernia

DISADVANTAGES OF SASI-S SURGERY

  • Increased risk of bile reflux into the stomach
  • Weight loss may be less than SADI-S or One anastomosis gastric bypass
  • Risk of an ulcer forming at the join between the stomach and the small intestine
  • Relatively new operation with limited long term outcomes

This procedure can be reversed back to a gastric sleeve simply by stapling across the join.
