The most common hernia is the inguinal hernia. This makes up 75% of all abdominal hernias and the subsequent need for a hernia operation. Inguinal hernias are a protrusion of the contents of the abdominal cavity through the inguinal canal. The inguinal canal is found in both males and females, within the lower abdominal wall.

In males, the inguinal canal is found near the spermatic cords as it holds up the testicles. In females, it supports the uterus. These canals are approximately 3-4 cm in length.
