Goal Setting for Success

How many: “this year, I’m going to do more exercise” or “I’m going to eat healthy from now on”, or “I am cutting junk food out”, type statements have you made? How many have you achieved?

A desire to change can be both inspiring and daunting. Something so big might mean we’re reluctant to start, or after the first slip-up, the whole idea gets put on the back-burner.

When we want to change, we have two options – do nothing and feel bad it doesn’t happen. Or, make a plan! Setting goals is a helpful way to affect positive change in our lives.

Here are some tips on setting and achieving goals:

  • KISS – Keep It Small and Simple. Rather than an unattainable, “all-or-nothing” statement, break your end goal down into smaller, simpler steps that feel easy to achieve – the easier the better!
  • Write it down – commit by writing it down, one goal at a time. Put it somewhere you can see often.
  • Motivation vs reality – Why do you want to achieve the change, and why isn’t it already happening? Look at what’s holding you back. Then you can find a solution. Maybe you’d rather have downtime to relax than go for a walk? Rearrange your routine to allow for both downtime and a walk, so you’re not sacrificing something you enjoy.
  • Accountability – talk about your goals with a trusted friend, counsellor or health professional. You could join a support or exercise group, use a personal trainer, arrange walks with friends etc. When you know someone else is counting on you or will ask you about your progress, it might help your dedication.

At Perth Weight Loss and Surgery, our goal is to help you reach your health goals. We are here to help you every step of the way. Get in contact with Dr Siva Gounder to book a consultation today.
