Updating Your Wardrobe After Weight Loss Surgery
The weight loss resulting from bariatric surgery means your body shape will completely change, which means new outfits will be in order.
Decluttering Your Wardrobe After Weight Loss Surgery
This represents the perfect opportunity to declutter your wardrobe – out with the old, in with the new.
Over the last few years, decluttering your home has become an art unto itself, with entire books published about it (looking at Marie Kondo) and even a Netflix series about cleaning wardrobes.
Ultimately, there’s lots of different guidance floating around, but here are a few quick tips to get you started:
- Decluttering can be a big job, and you may have to do an hour a day over a couple of days when you lead a busy lifestyle. Before you begin – set aside a few outfits for work that you know you will need to wear, so they don’t get lost in the process. This will also help you identify your most-used items.
- If you didn’t wear the item last season, e.g. all of last winter, you probably wouldn’t notice it’s gone (See ya cardigan! Into the charity bin for you!)
- Take this opportunity to protect and fix your clothing.
- If you have expensive or sentimentally valuable items, package them up properly in garment bags or boxes to protect them from wear and tear, dust and bugs.
- If you have items that need sewing, put them to the side and allocate time to get them fixed before the declutter process is over.
- Separate all of your clothes into three piles
- Keep
- Donate
- Maybe
- Come back to the Maybe pile after one day and sort through to see what you decide about each item.
Rebuilding – Start with the ‘Capsule Closet’ Staples
Now that you are left with only the pieces you need and love, you may need to invest in staples in smaller sizes post-surgery.
Start with the basics and build your wardrobe in your new size from there.
A capsule closet usually consists of the following:
- 1 black and 1 white t-shirt
- 1 black and 1 white long sleeve shirt
- 1 black and 1 white undershirt / singlet
- 1 white button down
- 1 neutral colour wool jumper
- 1 light jacket
- 1 pair jeans
- 1 pair trousers
- 1 pair black leggings
- 1 neutral colour casual dress
- 1 neutral colour winter coat
- 1 pair neutral colour shorts
You’ll always have something to wear with these items to mix and match. You can then explore more statement pieces without having to worry!
