Let’s talk about peptides: what we want you to know

There is a question we hear more and more often in our rooms: “I saw it online. Is it safe?”

Lately, that question is usually about peptides. You may have come across them too. Small vials sold through social media, often with confident promises about weight loss, energy, or recovery. If you have wondered about them, you are not alone, and asking is exactly the right thing to do.

We have written this because we would rather you hear the full story from our clinic, from people who understand your health, than piece it together from adverts, influencers and comment sections. So here is what is happening in Australia right now, what peptides actually are, and why we believe you deserve far more than a shortcut.

What is happening in Australia right now

Australia’s medicines regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has spent much of 2026 warning Australians about unapproved peptide products. We want to share the key points plainly, because they matter for anyone thinking about their weight.

In April, the TGA alerted the public to severe allergic reactions that led to hospitalisation, along with inflammation, palpitations, blurred vision and other harms linked to these products. By June, it had named unapproved peptides as a priority compliance area, alongside weight-loss medicines, vapes and sunscreens.

Since then, Victoria’s Department of Health has reported six cases of acute liver toxicity associated with an unapproved peptide sold as retatrutide, a substance that is still in clinical trials and is not approved in Australia. In August, the TGA and NSW Police seized more than $120,000 worth of illegal peptides and steroids allegedly linked to a social media influencer who had been importing, relabelling and selling them online.

Then, on 14 September 2026, the TGA reported a case that stayed with our team. A person who injected a product sold as retatrutide had uncontrollable vomiting, severe enough to tear their oesophagus, and needed hospital treatment. When the TGA tested the vial, there was no retatrutide in it at all. Instead it contained an undeclared prescription weight-loss medicine at roughly eight times the dose found in approved products.

We share this not to frighten you, but because it shows the real problem. When a product is bought outside the medical system, nobody can tell you for certain what is inside it, how much of it there is, or how your body will respond.

Health practitioners are part of this conversation too. The Medical Board of Australia has said some people are getting unapproved peptides from registered practitioners who are not prescribing on the basis of clinical need and evidence, and it is developing new guidance in response. Here in Western Australia, WA Health has said it strongly discourages people from buying and using unapproved peptide products.

So, what actually is a peptide?

Here is the simple version. Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. Your body makes many of its own, and they work as messengers. They help tell your cells to release a hormone, manage blood sugar, repair tissue or recognise that you have eaten enough.

Because they play such important roles, some peptides have been developed into genuine medicines. Insulin, which has helped people manage diabetes for a century, is a peptide. Several other peptide-based medicines have been through clinical trials and been assessed by the TGA for safety, quality and effectiveness for a specific use.

So the word “peptide” on its own tells you nothing about whether something is safe. What matters is whether that particular product has been properly tested and approved, whether it was made to pharmaceutical standards, and whether a doctor who knows your full health history has decided it is right for you. Many products sold online meet none of those tests. The TGA has found vials with no label at all, vials marked only with codes, and products missing the name or strength of the active ingredient. Earlier this year it tested imported products labelled as weight-loss medicines and found none of the advertised ingredient inside.

Why the quick fix worries us

Our concern is not really about one product. It is about the message behind them: that obesity is a cosmetic problem you can solve with a purchase. We know that is not true, and so do many of the people who walk through our doors after years of trying.

Obesity is serious, and it is common. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), around two in three Australian adults were living with overweight or obesity in 2022–24. In 2023–24, close to $800 million was spent directly treating obesity, with around $10 billion more spent on health conditions linked to overweight and obesity.

A shortcut also skips the questions that matter most. Why has the weight come on? Are there other conditions sitting alongside it, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, joint pain or reflux? What have you already tried, and why didn’t it last? And what will help you stay well in five or ten years, not just the next five weeks? These are the questions we explore with you when we first meet, because the answers shape everything that comes after.

Obesity is a disease, not a choice

The Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society describes obesity as a complex chronic disease, shaped by genetic, environmental, physiological and behavioural factors, that needs long-term care. The AIHW makes the same point: the causes are complex, and many of them sit outside a person’s direct control.

That is why no two people we see have the same story. For some, it is genetics and a strong family history. For others, it might be hormonal changes, a medication, years of shift work and broken sleep, a difficult period in life, or an environment that makes healthy choices harder. None of these are a moral failing. They are reasons, and understanding them is where real progress begins.
It is also why we say: when you understand your weight, it’s life changing. Not because there is a quick answer, but because you finally have the right one for you.

Already one of our patients?

If you are part of our patient community and you have been tempted by something you saw online, or have already tried it, please tell us. You will not be in trouble and you will not be judged. Your care team needs to know about every medicine, supplement or product you are using, especially before or after any procedure, so we can keep you safe. That conversation is always welcome, and it is far better to have it early.

What proper care looks like with us

Our promise to everyone who comes to see us is simple. You will never be rushed. You will never be judged. You will never be treated as a number.
We start by getting to know you. Your medical history, any related conditions, your medications, what you have tried before, your eating patterns, your sleep, and how you are feeling emotionally. All of it matters.

We talk through every option, honestly. Depending on your situation, that might include nutrition and dietitian support, physical activity, psychological support, medical treatment where clinically appropriate, or surgery for some people. Healthy eating and regular activity are part of every plan. Not every option suits everyone, and we will tell you plainly what we think fits your body, your health and your life.

We are open about risks and recovery. Every treatment has benefits and risks, and you deserve to understand both before you decide anything. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

We stay with you. Obesity is a chronic condition, so care should not stop once things start to change. Our team, including our allied health professionals, supports you through the changes to your body, your health and your everyday life over the long term.

No magic solution, just the right one for you

There is no single product, injection or procedure that works for everyone, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. What makes a real difference is treating obesity for what it is: a medical condition that deserves a proper diagnosis, a plan built around you, and support that lasts.

We know it can take courage to ask for help with your weight. If you are ready to work through it properly, with no shortcuts and no judgement, we are here to listen, to advise you honestly, and to help you find the right path for your particular situation.

Start your conversation with our team. Call us on (08) 6155 8822 or book a consultation online.

We look forward to supporting you, whatever stage of your journey you are at.
